I watched The Gorge the other day, and it was a whacky but fun movie. It starred Miles Teller and Anya Taylor-Joy, and I'd probably do anything for Anya if we're being honest. But the movie made several references to T.S. Elliot, with Miles' character writing poetry daily—even if he's not very good—and a specific reference to "The Hollow Men." It made me think about how I haven't read a lot of acclaimed poetry since high school really, and that it's something I'd like to get back into more regularly, hopefully inpsiring me to write more of my own. It's a nice release and a form of journaling that doesn't require as much mental effort/concrete recounting of the days.
Ironically enough, I was meeting up with a good home town friend later that day who I hadn't seen in 5-6 years. We were going out drinking with some of his friends, and naturally his timing estimates were a little impacted by his inebriation so I arrived at the bar/apartment early. It was in Old Town, which I hadn't explored too much since moving so I didn't mind walking around a little while waiting. The shops and buildings were all really neat with some cool architecture. Eventually, I stumbled across a bookstore that caught my eye, and I had time to kill so I went in. I browsed for a bit and it was a cute shop with a lot of traffic actually. People were reading books on the couch or discussing with their friends what they had been reading lately and what they were looking for next. In the fiction section, I eventually saw some books related to poets. Coincidentally, there was a collection of T.S Elliot's poems and additional context surrounding his career. I flipped through a few of them and came across "The Hollow Men," which I kinda laughed at the irony and read away. I woulda bought the book, but didn't want to carry it to bars so I decided against it. But I guess the point isn't really the poem or the movie or even the catching up with old friends, it's these little serendipitous interactions that happen far too often than they should. Almost like you're in an RPG and some side quest lore gets dropped in the main story, so you catch the reference and get more out of the story. It's the discovery of some benign information that immediately shows up in a completely different scenario. I don't know I just think that shit is so funny and really enriches what is otherwise just a normal day. Minor coincidences that convince you someone's toying with you and dropping an inside joke to see if you're paying attention; hell they may even be listening in on me right now which is why I gotta go—El Psy Kongroo!
Also Happy Birthday to my momma, love ya
